Which Orvis stores are closing?
A phone survey of Orvis' U.S. retail stores revealed which are due to close at the end of 2025 and which will remain open and refocus on fly fishing and wing-shooting.

Storied fly fishing gear manufacturer Orvis announced this week it was closing 31 stores and five outlets across the U.S., to retrench around its core fly fishing and wing-shooting product lines and away from apparel. Orvis President Simon Perkins told USA Today the "unprecedented tariff landscape" was partly to blame on the restructuring.
We couldn't find a conclusive list of which Orvis stores are closing and which Orvis stores are staying open. And naturally we were concerned about our local store in Portland, the Lake Oswego location. Since it felt like a load of anglers around the country will naturally be interested, we started making some calls. We spoke to retail associates across the country, and tried to confirm as accurately as possible which stores were staying open and which will be closing their doors. For stores that are closing, their last day in business is set to be Christmas Eve, December 24.
Stores that are closing are currently selling almost all their apparel at 40% off. A few stores are selling flies and fly-tying materials 50% off. Most fishing products including hard goods like rods and reels are not being discounted.
Reactions at Orvis are mixed
Employees we spoke at stores closing were somber, obviously. But several expressed gratitude that they had some warning and might be able to find something else in retail as the holiday season ramped up.
Representatives from surviving stores welcomed the change and the new, more focused programming it might bring. "I love fishing, fishing is the reason that I got into Orvis and the whole brand, so I'm glad for the new focus," one employee in the South said.
"We've got a solid customer base and both feet on the ground," said one employee in the Midwest. (None of these folks are authorized representatives, so I'm not going to mention their name or specific store to avoid getting them in trouble.) "I'm really looking forward to keeping more hunting on the shelf year-round, and get another rod table."
Another expressed optimism that this would help the company maintain relevance in the core communities it services. "We're going to hit the ground running in 2026 and start up in February with classes," they said. "I tell the staff, 'Guys, we've got to be fishy.' We've focused on building the acumen on the team, doing more with local partners and guides and outfitters, more collaborative events with Trout Unlimited, putting a foot outdoors and letting the people that have a foot in the outdoors come collaborate."
Any fly shop closure impacts community
Beyond all the employees that will have to find new jobs, it's a bummer that a lot of folks might no longer have a fly shop to go to, however far that focus had strayed from fly fishing. For a lot of anglers the closest Orvis was a reliable place to be able to buy gear.
Whether you've lost a job in the the closures, or now find your local fly fishing network poorer for the result, it's a sad state of affairs all around. If your local store is closing, and you get a chance, pay a visit and get your Christmas gifting done early.
