The CFS Maupin Meetup, recapped

We came, we fished, we won trivia (again!)

The Deschutes Access Road alongside the Deschutes River

CFStronauts,

That's a wrap on our third-annual Maupin Meetup! Thanks to everyone who came out and fished and supported the DRA's TroutFest event.

A few days spent in one of central Oregon's greatest small towns chasing redsides sure is a tonic.

Here's what I'm wondering about:
Do you have a plan for a "big" fishing trip this year? It doesn't have to be to an epic destination, just some time for yourself that you're looking forward to. Reply and let me know!

This year's meetup was plenty eventful, beginning with a massive weather system that pushed through on our first and dropped an inch of rain on the high desert, while featuring sideways lightning and 25-mile-per-hour winds. We managed to escape unscathed but a little ragged from a disrupted night's sleep.

The weekend wasn't as fishy in years past—you can put that down to the massive weather change—but Flow Staters still managed to find fish. For a couple folks that meant their first Deschutes fish, or even their first on a fly rod!

What's more, we managed to represent again at Grayling Education's TroutFest Trivia, taking first place for the second year in a row. (Well, we tied this year, but sharing is still a big milestone.) Special thanks also goes out to Heather and the iFishiBelong crew for letting us crash the pot luck, Mary Ann for the fun casting clinics, and of course all the DRA staffers and volunteers who made it all happen.

🎥 Film pick of the week

We talk a lot about how building a sustainable fly fishing practice means finding out for yourself where the sport intersects with your other creative pursuits. As such I really enjoyed CalTrout's mini portrait of artist and collaborator Elizabeth Jean Younce of Mustard Beetle, all about how she draws inspiration from places in California that are open to everyone to enjoy.
